    Well, the way that I absorbed it was that she was so fed up with the way the human world was, she respected him and how people like him could be regular humans. She felt responsible for taking the boy from his family and replacing him. She also somewhat replaced him in society, to a degree. So when she goes back to the remains, she essentially leaves him what she had of that world, what he would have had. she left him that society he would have lived in. to an extent, she felt sorry for him on multiple levels. It could also be a way of showing the sorrows of a missed childhood; a loss of innocence, if you will.
